Spurs head off to Japan
Tottenham Hotspur has announced their squad for the upcoming pre-season tour to Japan and South Korea, featuring a mix of established first-team players, new signings, and promising young talents.
The 31-player squad includes:
Goalkeepers: Guglielmo Vicario, Brandon Austin, Alfie Whiteman, Luca Gunter
Defenders: George Abbott, Ben Davies, Radu Dragusin (Korea only), Ashley Phillips, Pedro Porro, Emerson Royal, Djed Spence, Destiny Udogie
Midfielders: Lucas Bergvall, Yves Bissouma, Alfie Devine, Jamie Donley, Archie Gray, Tyrese Hall, James Maddison, Pape Matar Sarr, Oliver Skipp
Attackers: Brennan Johnson, Dejan Kulusevski, Will Lankshear, Mikey Moore, Richarlison, Dane Scarlett, Manor Solomon, Heung-Min Son, Alejo Veliz, Timo Werner
One of the surprises in the squad is the inclusion of Djed Spence, who has been given a chance to impress new manager Ange Postecoglou after spending time on loan last season. This has led to speculation about a potential “Spence redemption” among fans.
Another notable inclusion is Lucas Bergvall, confirming that his recent injury was not serious. The presence of young talents like Mikey Moore, Will Lankshear, Tyrese Hall, and George Abbott in the squad highlights Postecoglou’s willingness to give youth a chance during this pre-season tour[5].
The inclusion of Richarlison, Ben Davies, and Destiny Udogie is also noteworthy, as they have been nursing injuries but could potentially play a part in the tour.
Some key players will be missing from the tour. Fraser Forster remains at Hotspur Way to continue his rehabilitation from a fractured foot. Rodrigo Bentancur, Giovani Lo Celso, Cristian Romero, and Micky van de Ven will rejoin the squad closer to the start of the season after representing their countries in the Copa America and Euro 2024.
Interestingly, Bryan Gil and Sergio Reguilon have been granted permission not to travel in order to explore prospective transfer opportunities and will not be with the squad for the upcoming pre-season tour.
The tour will see Spurs play three matches: against J League champions Vissel Kobe in Tokyo on July 27, K League All Stars in Seoul on July 31, and FC Bayern in Seoul on August 3. These matches will provide valuable preparation for the upcoming 2024/25 season and give fans a glimpse of how the team is shaping up under Postecoglou’s management.
