Tottenham Hotspur midfielder, Yves Bissouma has been suspended for nitrous oxide video, for the club’s Premier League opener against Leicester City following the emergence of a video showing him inhaling nitrous oxide, commonly known as laughing gas.

The Incident

The video, which surfaced after Tottenham’s pre-season defeat to Bayern Munich, depicted Bissouma inhaling the substance from a balloon. Nitrous oxide was classified as a Class C drug in the UK in 2023, making its recreational use a criminal offense.

Club’s Response

Tottenham’s manager, Ange Postecoglou, confirmed the suspension, stating:

“He won’t be available on Monday. We’ve suspended him from Monday’s game. He needs to build that trust back with both me and the group.”

Postecoglou emphasized the dual nature of the situation, addressing both the personal and professional aspects of Bissouma’s actions:

  1. Personal implications: The manager acknowledged that Bissouma made a poor decision and needs support to avoid similar mistakes in the future.
  2. Professional responsibilities: Postecoglou highlighted the importance of footballers recognizing their role model status and the impact of their decisions on the club and supporters.

Player’s Apology

Bissouma has since apologized for his actions, saying:

“I want to apologise for these videos. This was a severe lack of judgment. I understand how serious this is and the health risks involved, and I also take my responsibility as a footballer and role model very seriously.”

Implications and Next Steps

Yves Bissouma has been suspended for nitrous oxide video and will miss Tottenham’s first match of the 2024/25 Premier League season. Postecoglou has indicated that while there are sanctions in place, the club is also focusing on education and rehabilitation. The manager emphasized that the “door is open” for Bissouma, suggesting a path for the player to rebuild trust with both the management and his teammates.

As Tottenham prepares for their season opener without Bissouma, the incident serves as a reminder of the scrutiny professional athletes face and the importance of responsible behavior both on and off the field.
